How did Bangu come about?
Know that it was within the Bangu Factory, in the late 19th century, that the football team was born through the initiative of English technicians working at the factory. In a short time, they came up with the idea of building a football field and found a ball in the factory’s equipment that came from England.
The team was founded on April 17, 1904, under the name Bangu Athletic Club, with the red and white colors chosen by the English founders in honor of England’s patron saint, Saint George.
From its foundation, sports events were organized, featuring various sports such as athletics, rugby, and, of course, football. The enthusiasm was such that in 1905, they founded the Metropolitan Football League.
This league was created by city teams to organize official football competitions, which were played in São Paulo and Bahia. In 1906, the first edition of the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro Championship) took place, with the team being largely composed of English players.
The passion for football grew, and Brazilians Manoel Maia and Francisco Carregal decided to join Bangu’s team. To do this, they had to leave the Metropolitan Football League, as it prohibited the participation of “people of color.”
From 1912, Bangu’s team re-entered the state competition but had a weak campaign with only two victories in 14 matches.
Starting from 1929, Luiz Antônio started wearing the team’s jersey, becoming one of the greatest defenders in the history of world football.
Bangu Atlético Clube’s Path of Growth
The first victory in the Campeonato Carioca came in 1933, and from 1950, Bangu began featuring prominent names from the World Cup. In the same year, they signed Zizinho, securing the Rio de Janeiro runner-up title.
They also had the remarkable talent of Zózimo, a two-time world champion from the 1958 and 1962 World Cups. In 1959, they achieved another Rio de Janeiro runner-up title. However, after severing ties with the Bangu Factory, the team lost its sponsorship.
During this time, Castor de Andrade took over football operations and started offering significant rewards to players using resources from the “jogo do bicho” (an illegal gambling game).
Bangu’s team achieved the Rio de Janeiro runner-up title in 1964, 1965, and 1967. In 1966, with a spectacular 3-0 victory against Flamengo, they secured the championship on December 18.
With Castor Andrade’s departure, the team faced financial difficulties again until the early 1980s, when Castor returned to lead the club. This time, however, he served as a patron instead of a president.
In 1985, Bangu reached the final of the Brazilian Championship against Coritiba on July 31, but lost in the penalty shootout, finishing as the runner-up.
However, starting from 1992, they lost their sponsor due to Castor de Andrade’s imprisonment and began to face numerous challenges. They were even relegated to the Second Division of the Campeonato Carioca in 2004.
In 2008, after winning the second division title, Bangu managed to return to the First Division competitions. They have indeed participated in the Rio de Janeiro championship 103 times.
